Bhopal Air Quality (AQI)
Madhya Pradesh, India · City of Lakes
Monthly AQI — Bhopal
Annual average AQI ~103. Clear seasonal cycle: monsoon (Jul–Sep) AQI 48–72, winter (Dec–Feb) AQI 148–165. Better than north Indian IGP cities due to Vindhya plateau elevation.
Bhopal's Air Quality: Lake City Advantage
Bhopal sits on the Vindhya plateau at 527m elevation — high enough above the Gangetic Plain to avoid the worst of north India's pollution belt. The Upper Lake (Bhojtal, 36 km²) and Lower Lake provide thermal mass that moderates inversions and promotes some atmospheric mixing. This geography gives Bhopal a measurable air quality advantage over flat-plain cities like Delhi and Patna.
The Mandideep Industrial Area, 20 km south of Bhopal, hosts pharmaceuticals, engineering, and chemical manufacturing. Bhel (Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited) operates a major plant in the city. Vehicle exhaust from a growing urban population (2.8M) contributes significantly to NO₂ and PM2.5. Road dust from expanding construction is also a notable source.
Bhopal's air quality has improved noticeably since 2018 as the MP government expanded the BS-VI vehicle transition, restricted diesel generator use, and implemented stricter construction dust norms. The city's annual PM2.5 average fell from ~45 μg/m³ (2016) to ~32 μg/m³ (2024).
